Decompression Therapy

S&P Offshore owns and operates a number of containerized decompression and hyperbaric treatment chambers for the decompression or therapeutic treatment of divers.

We have technicians with full Diver Medic Training (DMT) certification and qualified chamber operators that we can mobilize on short notice or for emergencies.

How it works :

The chamber is pressurized with oxygen or air to a level higher than atmospheric pressure, creating a hyperbaric environment. This increased pressure helps to dissolve more oxygen into the bloodstream, which can help to alleviate the symptoms of certain medical conditions.

Decompression chambers should only be operated by trained medical personnel with experience in hyperbaric medicine. They must have knowledge about the equipment, safety protocols, and how to manage patients in the chamber.

Importance of decompression chambers to divers :

Decompression sickness, also known as "the bends," is a condition that can occur when a diver ascends too quickly from a deep dive. Symptoms can include joint pain, skin rash, and neurological symptoms. Decompression chambers are used to treat this condition by slowly reducing the pressure and allowing the excess nitrogen to dissipate from the body.

Divers can also use decompression chambers as a preventive measure, known as "decompression stops." This involves making several stops at shallower depths during the ascent to allow the body to gradually adjust to the decrease in pressure.

In some remote diving locations, decompression chambers may be the only available option for treating decompression sickness. Having access to a decompression chamber can therefore be essential for divers who are exploring remote locations.

Knowing that a decompression chamber is available can provide divers with a sense of safety and peace of mind. Diving can be a risky activity, and having access to a decompression chamber can help to mitigate some of those risks.
